What is Internet?

The Internet is a network. Through the internet computer systems around the world are connected with each other today. Or you can also call the Internet an infallible technology, through which every computer is connected to another computer.

There are different types of computer networks today, such as – LAN, PAN, MAN, CAN, WAN, etc.

In today’s time, internet has become very important for our lives because almost everyone is using the internet. By using the Internet people find anything on search engines. There are various features of internet.

Types of Internet Connections

Note – Types of internet & types of internet connections both are the same thing. If someone asks you to tell the types of internet & their connections, then you will tell what we have told you. I hope you understand this.

There are different types of internet connectivity, whose names are given below.

1. Dial-UP Connection

Dial-up connections were the first way for to people connect their computers to the Internet. To do a dial-up connection, you use a normal telephone line to establish a connection between your computer & a server.

This connection is established by your computer dialing a particular phone number, such as – you would when calling someone.

When your computer & the server are connected to each other then you can use the internet, such as – Opening web pages, Email, etc.

However, the speed of dial-up connections is quite slow so it can take a long time to access large files or complex websites. The disadvantage of using a dial-up connection is that you cannot do & receive telephone calls at the same time when you use a dial-up connection.

2. Leased Line

leased line is actually a high-speed Internet connection between two locations, such as – Offices or Branches. Involves renting a dedicated cable from a telecommunications company (Telco) to establish a direct and private connection between these locations.

A leased line connection enables to users transfer large amounts of data and ensures a consistent & reliable Internet connection. Leased lines come in different capacities. A single-channel leased line typically offers speeds of up to 10Mb/s & a double-channel leased line can provide up to 40Mb/s.

leased line is not necessarily cheaper than a physical line. In fact, leased lines can often be more expensive than regular broadband connections. The main advantage of using a leased line connection is reliability and consistent speed by which the user can transfer data at high speed.

3. ISDN

ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network. It is a telecommunications technology intended to provide faster & more efficient communications for both voice & data.

It converts traditional analog telephone lines into digital signals. ISDN connections have the ability to simultaneously transmit voice, video & data over a single digital line which makes it a versatile solution for a variety of communication needs.

In ISDN, voice & data are converted to digital signals which allows clearer and more reliable connections than analog systems.

ISDN lines provide multiple digital channels that can be used simultaneously for different purposes, such as – Making phone calls and sending data at the same time.

The main advantage of using an ISDN connection is – higher quality connections, faster data transfer rates & the ability to combine different types of communication services into one network.

4. DSL

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. DSL is a type of technology that provides high-speed Internet access over existing telephone lines network.

It is a way to use the same copper telephone lines that also carry voice calls to transmit digital data for Internet connectivity.

DSL technology is capable of faster data transmission than traditional dial-up connections which makes it possible to have an “always on” Internet connection without dialing a phone number to connect. The speed of a DSL phone line connection is 5 Mbps.

5. ADSL

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. ADSL is a type of DSL technology that provides high-speed internet access over the traditional copper telephone lines network.

The term “asymmetric” refers to the fact that ADSL offers different upload & download speeds. The download speed is typically faster than the upload speed. The speed of ADSL ranges from 256 kbps to 24 Mbps and the upload speeds are much lower.

6. Cable

Cable Internet Connection is a high-speed Internet connection service that you subscribe to through a cable provider. Cable Internet connections allow you to connect to the Internet using cable infrastructure.

A cable Internet connection is provided through the same coaxial cables that also carry cable TV services to your home. A cable Internet connection provides you with a high-speed broadband connection to the Internet.

A cable Internet connection is capable of carrying a lot of information, which makes cable internet relatively fast compared to older technologies, such as – Dial-up or ADSL. The speed of cable internet connection ranges from 25 Mbps to 1 Gbps or even higher.

7. Wi-Fi & Wireless Connection

Wi-Fi or Wireless connection is a way of connecting different devices to internet. In simple words Wi-Fi allows devices to connect to the internet wirelessly. Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. Wi-Fi technology uses radio waves instead of wires to have an internet connection.

Wi-Fi technology uses radio waves to establish wireless connections that allow devices, such as – SmartphonesLaptopsTablets PC & other gadgets to access the internet or communicate with each other within a certain range of Wi-Fi.

This Wi-Fi or wireless network has become widely used in homes, businesses & public spaces that provide convenient and flexible internet connectivity.

8. Broadband

Broadband is also a type of internet connection. You can easily connect your device, such as – Mobile PhonesPersonal ComputersTablets Pc & other devices to broadband and use internet.

Broadband is a high-speed Internet connection technology that provides super faster Internet and more efficient than traditional dial-up Internet connections.

The main feature of broadband is that it can transmit large amounts of data quickly & suitable for doing various online activities, such as – Streaming, Gaming, Video conferencing & downloading large files.

9. Satellite Internet Access

Satellite Internet is also an internet connection type that uses communication satellites in orbit around the Earth to provide internet service to homes, businesses & remote areas where traditional wired internet infrastructure, such as – DSL or cable is not possible or available.

This Internet connectivity technology connects users to Internet via signals transmitted to and received from these satellites. The satellite internet connection is more expensive compared to cable internet connectivity types because it uses satellites in orbit to send data.

10. Optical Fiber

Optical fiber is also a type of internet connection. Optical fiber cables are made up of thin strands of glass & plastic. These fiber optics are thinner than a human hair & they are bundled together to form cables.

Fiber optics uses light waves to transfer data from one place to another place. Optical fiber is capable of transmitting and receiving data at extremely high speeds and allows reliable communications over long distances.

You can say in simple words that optical fiber is a technology that capable of sending data over long distances at the speed of light without significant signal loss. The major advantages of using optical fiber are – High Data Capacity, Low Signal Loss, Security, and light Speed.

11. Cellular Networks

Cellular networks are also a type of Internet connection. Cellular networks provide wireless Internet access to communication devices, such as – Mobile phones and tablets by using radio waves to transmit data between devices and cell towers.

Cellular networks enable users to access the Internet & perform various online activities without the need for a wired connection, such as – Sending and Receiving emails, Using Social Media, Net Banking, and bill payments.

Cellular networks are a prevalent technology for accessing the mobile internet and are extensively utilized for both voice & data communication today.

12. Cable Modem

cable modem is a device that uses a cable connection to connect your home & business to the internet. Cable modems provide 1 gigabit per second of high-speed Internet access. The most important thing is that through cable modem you can connect many devices to the internet.
